Savanah Nguyen September 27, 2016 English 1030 Mr. Curtis-Cummins Analysis of a ‘Visual Text’ from A Path Appears In the novel A Path Appears, the authors Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn uses people’s personal experiences to send a message to their readers. One of the pictures that stood out to me in this novel was on page 20. The image shows an infant with clubfoot. The caption states, “ When children with clubfoot can’t get treatment, they may never walk or work as adults”(20). The story behind the photo is about how a girl in the West African country of Niger, Rashida Yaye, who was born with a common birth defect, clubfoot. Clubfoot is when both feet are pointing in the wrong direction.This defect happens to every 1 in a thousand babies. The treatment for this defect consists of the infant to wear a correcting series cast for a month. The photo I plan to use to analyze from the book A Path Appears is on page 20. This photo shows an infant born with clubfoot. Without the right kind of treatment they may never walk or work as adults. I personally don't have any connections to this photo, but i have seen this disease in a few children and it's very unfortunate.

G ENERAL PROMPT:  How was your first essay for a College Writing class?  What did you enjoy about this essay or the activities leading up to it?  What was challenging?    I feel really strong about my first essay for a college writing class. I enjoyed how the topic was related to me. It definitely makes it a lot easier to write about by using my personal experiences. I would say the most challenging part of the essay was really expanding on the authors quotes and using them to help support my points.

I feel like I have have a good general structure with my draft. Out of this workshop I would ideally like to expand more and work more on the conclusion.

My intentions for this draft was to explain to the readers how my experiences with different English can impact a person. In this draft I would like to focus on analyzing the quotes from different authors to support my points.

Whether it is talking to my family, friends, teachers, grandparents, strangers, it is all English but it is different. I speak differently to everyone and wonder how that is come to be.I grew up in a family where the people who were constantly taking care of me spoke broken English. But, I was also fortunate enough to grow up in a neighborhood with a great education. My grandparents often took care of my sisters and I while my parents worked. With being Vietnamese it wasn’t too long ago that both my grandparents and parents came over to the United States. They all spoke broken English. Growing up listening to my parents talk to me I understood. I was constantly surrounded by family speaking broken English. I technically grew up learning broken English since I was constantly surrounded by it. Later on l...

Out of the 3 readings I enjoyed Malcolm X the most. I thought it was really interesting how he used his time in prison to improve on his education. Later on he started to grow an interest in black history. I really enjoyed the irony of his time in jail being one of the best thing that happened to him.

Summary/Main Ideas Experiencing the world is a way of reading  How you could know of a word before you've even seen it  Pre-writing Quotes/Annotations 1. Quote: "The teacher cannot put it together for the student; that is the students creative task"(Freire 10). Annotation: This experience the author explains cannot be taught to you. It is everyone's own experience is what teaches you. 2.Quote: "Only by learning the significance could they know how to memorize it, to fix it" (Freire 8). Annotation: You are likely to memorize something better when it physically happens. 3. 1. The pre-reading strategies I had used with A Path Appears were reading the back of the book, looking at the pictures, and looking at the table of contents. 2. Based on my pre-readings of the book, I believe that there is a powerful message that the authors want to portray. This book is generally about this journey that everyone can be apart of by contributing to social change. By fulfilling these acts can help build a stronger and more united world. I believe this book is non fiction. 3. I am looking forward to reading this book. I believe it is going to be an eye opener and change my views of a few things.
